On alot of websites you will find a schematic of a runnig astable and pulsing a mosfet, this curcuit should not be build as it is very uneffiecient and unstable. With the output coupled through a home made salt water capacitor it was possible to have loud and very bright sparks.

I cut off the problematic pin and put a blob of hot-melt glue on it, but it still arcs. You may get shown gpogle of 2ns TIP35Cs working in this configuration, but if their transformer is a bit soggier, or their transistor is a bit more robust, theirs could work OK, and yours fail.
